Education can learn a thing or two from the efforts in the health care industry to improve performance while constraining costs. In fact, Atul Gawande — the famed doctor- journalist— provides a handy framework for system change in his recent talk at TED . Is it as simple as a check list, you might ask? Well, maybe not, but the emerging science of performance improvement and innovation that some folks like Tim Waters at McREL,   Tony Bryk of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the innovation team at AdvancED are building has some great promise for education’s dual dilemma of raising standards in a period of continuing austerity.

Pretty cool, yes?
